The promotion of young talent has been one of the founding principles of the FES. The first scholarships were awarded to particularly talented young individuals from a working class milieu who were taking an active part in the young democracy of the Weimar Republic.
For the FES therefore, it is not only the applicants' academic achievement but also their social and political involvement and their personal attitudes that play an important part in the selection process.
The FES supports students from public or state-approved universities and from polytechnical colleges. It supports all academic subjects and postgraduate programmes. It is also possible for non-German students to apply for the scholarship programme. They, however, need to study in Germany at the time of application.

The Program Officer for Foreign and Security Policies is a paid, full-time permanent position to conceptualize and implement international dialogue programs (including political panel discussions, seminars, and conferences on current foreign and security topics) relevant to the transatlantic partnership between members of Congress, the German Bundestag, the U.S. and German governments and think tanks. The right candidate has a deep understanding of German, European, U.S. and transatlantic politics, as well as international policy issues. The applicant enjoys critical thinking, research, and writing/editing articles on American politics. A key element of this position is the ability to build and maintain networks of political partners. The applicant needs to be able to execute, supervise, and support logistical, operational, communication, and substantive details for individual programs and projects. Must be able and willing to travel; regular work hours are 40 hours/week, though evenings, weekends, and longer hours, in particular during program weeks, will be required. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, responsible, proactive, professional, creative, and able to multitask; a quick and eager learner with extremely high professional standards. Professional proficiency in German is required, as the role requires regular communication in German with headquarters, partners, and Bundestag members. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens must have a valid work permit. A sponsorship by FES is not possible.
