Martin Schulz to become Chairman of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
Kurt Beck, the Chairman of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and former Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, announced on Tuesday that he would retire from his position after four terms at the head of Germany’s oldest and most storied political foundation.
“Following careful consideration,” Beck proposed former President of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Martin Schulz, as his successor. “A proven and respected European,” Schulz will be able to “embody and advance” the international work and European solidarity of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung. Schulz has an international profile and a record of defending democracy and the rule of law in the face of right-wing extremism and populism.
Leadership elections for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung take place every two years. Nearly 130 supervisory members from politics, academia, labor unions, and business will cast their votes in the upcoming board elections this December. The FES was founded 95 years ago, and is active in over 100 offices around the world.
