Remembering Paul Dewar, former Canadian MP of the New Democratic Party of Canada

We are deeply saddened by the loss of a great friend of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Canada: former Ottawa-Centre MP Paul Dewar. Paul, who represented his constituents for almost 10 years in the House of Commons, has served as the foreign affairs critic for the New Democratic Party (NDP) and has worked with FES on a number of occasions. He was part of the transatlantic group Globale Atlantiker and always impressed us with his mastery of international issues, his humane convictions, and his personal humility. He died of cancer at the age of 56, leaving behind his wife and his two sons, as well as his political family. In his last address to parliamentarians, Paul encouraged us to be more humane and collegial in politics: “Let us transcend what is to what can be. Let us respect each other and fight against cynicism, which only promotes division, fear and hatred.” The social democratic family has lost a courageous man of conviction who inspired a generation of progressives in Ottawa, Canada and beyond.

Nous sommes profondément attristés par la perte d’un grand ami de la Fondation Friedrich Ebert au Canada, l’ancien député d’Ottawa-Centre Paul Dewar. Paul, qui représentait ses concitoyens pendant presque dix ans aux Communes, a servi comme porte-parole des affaires étrangères pour le Nouveau parti démocratique (NPD) et a collaboré avec la FES à plusieurs reprises. Il faisait partie du groupe d’élus transatlantique Globale Atlantiker et il nous a toujours impressionné par sa maîtrise des dossiers internationaux, ses principes humanitaires et son humilité personnelle. Il est décédé à seulement 56 ans, à la suite d’un cancer, et laisse derrière sa femme et ses deux fils, ainsi que toute sa famille politique. Dans son dernier discours aux députés, Paul nous a encouragés à exercer plus de collégialité en politique : « Transcendons ce qui nous fige dans le moment pour nous concentrer sur ce qui pourrait être accompli. Respectons-nous les uns les autres et luttons contre le cynisme, qui ne fait que promouvoir la division, la peur et la haine. » La famille sociale-démocrate a perdu un courageux homme de cœur, qui a inspiré une génération de progressistes à Ottawa et au Canada.
